Cycling Day Rides and Workshops

We have Cruiser Bikes for rent for personnel on TDY orders. We know how hard it can be to get around, or how expensive rental car can be! Rent a cruiser bike and save money! You must have TDY orders. Cruiser bikes combine balloon-tires, upright seating posture, single-speed mechanicals, straightforward steel construction — with expressive styling. The bikes, noted for their durability and heavy weight, were the most popular bicycle in the United States from the early 1930s through the 1950s— and enjoyed renewed popularity in the late 1990's.

Mountain biking entails the sport of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, whether riding specially equipped mountain bikes or hybrid road bikes. Most mountain bikes share similar characteristics that underscore durability and performance in rough terrain: wide, knobby tires, large frame tubing, front fork or dual suspension shock absorbers. This individual sport requires endurance, bike handling skills and self-reliance, and can be performed almost anywhere from a back yard to a gravel road, but the majority of mountain bikers ride off-road trails, whether country back roads, fire roads, or singletrack (narrow trails that wind through forests, mountains, deserts, or fields).

Hiking and Climbing
Vicenza Outdoor Recreation is dedicated to creating innovative and exciting hiking trips, and safe and practical instruction. In addition, our indoor rock wall offers the opportunity for climbers of all abilities to challenge and enjoy themselves in a fun and safe environment.

Overnight Mountain Hut Hike - Sud Tirol Dolomites
This is one of the most dramatic and exciting hiking areas in the Alps. Strikingly different from the French and Swiss Alps, the limestone Dolomites of northern Italy rise dramatically from Alpine Valleys to form startling, spire-like peaks and towering canyonesque rock faces. Beginning in the Sud Tirol, we will hike along the hgh route, Alta Via 1, through the Pragser, Tofana Civetta mountain groups. The impressive scenery and vareity of the terrain is matched only by the warmth and hospitality of the rifugio and hotels. The unusual contrasts in landscapes, added to the curious mix of Italian and Austrian influences, means fantastic hiking and plenty of pasta!

Hiking Trips
Pre Alps - Enjoy an escape to the Pre Alps, the mountinous area of the Veneto just before the Dolomites, Hike on your own, then enjoy relaxing in the lush green atmosphere.
Pasubio Tunnels - Visit one of the unique engineering achievements of the Italian Allied forces during World War I. The 52 tunnels of Mt. Pasubio, called the Gallerie, were built and used 1915-18 to provide lateral lines of communication and supply to the Italian V Corps in the Pasubio area.
Monte Baldo - Take the cable car from Malcensine (Lake Garda) up to Monte Baldo. Enjoy a day of hiking among a variety of Italian flora and fauna, along with stunning views of Lake Garda. Trails range from Easy to strenuous hikes.

Paintball
Paintball is a game in which players eliminate opponents by hitting them with pellets containing paint (referred to as a "paintball") usually shot from a carbon dioxide or compressed-gas powered paintball gun (or marker). Games can be also played either indoors or outdoors and take various forms, of which some of the most popular are woodsball, scenario, X-Ball and speedball. Rules for playing paintball vary widely, with most designed to ensure that participants enjoy the sport in a safe environment. The sport requires a significant amount of equipment.

A game of paintball usually involves two opposing teams seeking to eliminate all of the other team's players or to complete some other objective, such as retrieving a flag, eliminating a specific player, or other paintball variations. Depending on the style of paintball played, a paintball game can last from seconds to days.

We offer an exciting paintball program at Caserma Ederle. During the year we host different activities from group outings, unit training, unit games, open play, to tournaments. We are open for limited operations during the winter months, but you may call to schedule a group outing, unit training, or unit game. Contact us at 634-7453.

Via Ferrata
A via ferrata (Italian for "iron road". Plural vie ferrate) is a mountain route which is equipped with fixed cables, stemples, ladders, and bridges. Walkers and climbers can follow via ferratas without needing to use their own ropes and belays, and without the risks associated with unprotected scrambling and climbing. The first via ferratas were built in the Dolomite mountain region of Italy during the First World War, to aid the movement of mountain infantry. For more on the history of via ferrata

Snowshoeing
Snowshoes are footwear for walking over snow. Snowshoes work by distributing the weight of the person over a larger area so that the person's foot doesn't sink completely into the snow. Snowshoeing expands the potential for exercise available in the wintertime. It has the added benefit of being gentler on the feet than walking or running the equivalent routes, since snow cushions the foot's impact. For the same reason, it is less detrimental to the environment, since the snow likewise buffers the earth against the impact of so many hikers and campers, cutting back on trail erosion and other effects of heavy use.

Snowshoeing makes even familiar hikes different and new. If the snow is deep enough, obstacles such as large boulders and fallen logs can be more easily bypassed. Winter transforms familiar forests into something wonderful and strange, and clearer, bluer skies in winter often afford more sweeping, longer-range views from favorite lookouts than are available in summer situations. The stillness of the air, quiet and snow cover give nature a pristine feel that is sometimes lacking at other times of year.
